Fuhr, LaFontaine Elected to Hall

Pat LaFontaine and Grant Fuhr, two hockey greats who both played for a time with the Buffalo Sabres, have been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame sources told FOXSports.com.

LaFontaine, a center and one of the highest-scoring American-born players of all-time, played with the New York Islanders, the Sabres and the New York Rangers before ending his career in part because of concussion problems.

LaFontaine had 468 goals and 545 assists in 865 career games with the New York Islanders and Rangers and the Buffalo Sabres. He had his best season in 1992-93, totaling 53 goals and 95 assists. He was the third American with 1,000 career points.

Fuhr, who played the bulk of his career with the Edmonton Oilers and won four Stanley Cups there, also played in Buffalo, Toronto and St. Louis and had a high-profile with many of the great Team Canada clubs who won fame in international competitions.

Fuhr, the first African-American to be elected to the hockey Hall, starred on the Oilers' championship teams of the 1980s and helped Canada win the Canada Cup tournament in 1987. He was a first team All-Star and Vezina Trophy winner in 1988.

The following attributes are the basis on which the election of the nominees was considered: Playing ability, sportsmanship, character and their contribution to the team or teams and to the game of hockey in general.

 Induction ceremonies will be held on Monday, November 3rd in Toronto.
